Fenabrave: auto Sales moves up by 57% in the beginning of the year

São Paulo – Total auto sales in the first half of January in the Brazilian market moved up by 56.86% compared to the same period last year, according to the data disclosed today by the National Automobile Dealers Association (Fenabrave). A total of 179,424 units were sold, versus 114,386 in the first fifteen days of 2007. Compared to the first half of December, sales dropped by 21.62%. The data include passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, motorcycles and highway equipment, and also include the number of licensed units.

When considering only the sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, a total of 95,712 units were licensed until January 15, a 59.93% growth compared to 59,845 units licensed in the first fifteen days of 2007. When compared to the first half of December, sales dropped by 24.19%. Truck and bus (32.9%) and motorcycle (56.89%) sales also rose, compared to the first fifteen days of 2007.

According to Fenabrave’s data, in the first 15 days of January, Volkswagen recovered the market leadership in the passenger car category, with 26.43% of total sales. Fiat, which ranked first last year, accounted for 24.04% of sales, followed by General Motors with 22.82% and Ford, with 8.18% .

The best-selling car in the period was Volkswagen Gol (10,308 units), followed by Fiat Palio (7,070), GM Corsa sedan (5,671), VW Fox/CrossFox (5,632), Fiat Mille (4,980), GM Celta (4,830), Fiat Siena (3,323), Ford Fiesta hatch (2,730), Fiat Strada (2,344) and Ford EcoSport (2,131).
